Play safe, stay in control
Gambling is for adults only (18+), and it should cost you only what you could spend on a night out. This page puts the practical side in plain terms: how to tell when play is slipping, which limits to set, how to shut yourself out, and who to call. None of the five casinos we compare holds a licence from an Australian state or territory regulator or from ACMA, so the protections that come with local oversight do not apply to you. That makes your own limits more important, not less.
Warning signs to watch for
Problems rarely start with one big loss. They build through small shifts in behaviour. Treat these as a prompt to stop and think:
- You deposit more than you planned, or return the same day to win back a loss.
- You hide how much you play from family or friends.
- You borrow money, or use funds meant for rent, bills or food.
- Sessions run longer than intended, and stopping feels irritating or hard.
- You chase a bonus because the wagering terms feel like a debt you must clear.
- Gambling is your main way of dealing with stress, boredom or low mood.
If two or three of these sound familiar, take a break before the next deposit.
Setting limits before you play
Decide the numbers while you are calm, not mid-session. Pick a deposit amount you can lose completely without touching essentials, and write it down. Every casino we cover has a minimum deposit of 20 EUR, but a minimum is not a target. Amounts are published in EUR, so convert them to A$ at the current rate and set your budget in the currency you actually earn.
Bonuses deserve the same discipline. A headline offer looks generous, yet a 35x or 40x wagering requirement means you must stake the bonus (and at some brands the deposit as well) many times over before withdrawing. A bigger package is not a reason to deposit more. Our wagering guide shows how to calculate what a requirement costs. Remember too that bonuses cannot be combined, and cancelling one removes the bonus balance.
Where a casino offers its own tools, such as deposit caps, session reminders or a cooling-off break, switch them on at registration. We do not verify which tools each brand provides, so check the account settings yourself and treat any missing option as a reason for extra caution.
Self-exclusion with BetStop
BetStop is the national self-exclusion register. Registering blocks you from licensed Australian wagering providers for the period you choose. It is a strong step, but be clear about its reach: the casinos on this site are not licensed in Australia, so a BetStop registration may not stop an offshore site from accepting you. If you want to stop, do not rely on a register alone.
- Register with BetStop for the licensed providers it covers.
- Contact each offshore casino you use and ask in writing for your account to be closed.
- Ask your bank about blocking gambling transactions on your cards.
- Use device-level blockers on your phone and computer.
Where to get help in Australia
Gambling Help Online provides free, confidential support by phone and online chat. Call 1800 858 858 to talk to a trained counsellor, whether the worry is yours or a family member's. You do not need to be in crisis to ring. Asking early is easier than asking late.
If gambling has left you in debt, a financial counsellor can talk to creditors on your behalf, and the helpline can point you to one. Speak to a doctor if low mood or anxiety has become part of the picture.
We are an independent comparison site and cannot offer counselling. If something here worries you, put the phone ahead of the browser.
